Relief work by Arya Samaj during Latur Earthquake, 1993

On the early morning of 30 Sep 1993, an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on Richter Scale rocked the districts of Latur and Usmanabad in Maharashtra. The degree of fury was such that dwellings in several villages of these two districts were totally converted to debris. More than 10000 people lost their lives in Latur and Osmanabad districts. In adjoining Karnataka, 9 people were killed and about 16,000 people injured. Number of houses destroyed in the earthquake was about 30,000.That was a full Moon night on 29-30 Sep 1993, which blackened the lives of more than 50000 families. After the emergency meeting called by Swami Anandbodh Saraswati (President of Sarvadeshik Sabha), a team of AryaVeers (Arya Veer Dal Sewa Samiti) was formed under the leadership of Sh. Vinay Arya with order to initiate the rescue work immediately.

First team of 4 members started journey of 1500 Kms by road in the Sewa Van donated by Jay Bharat Maruti. After reaching Latur, it was found that the members of Arya Samaj Latur have already started the rescue work. AryaVeers also joined them accelerating the pace of rescue. AryaVeers visited several affected areas and dug out the dead bodies and their funeral was done according to the Vedic Principles. Medical first aid was provided to the injured. Critically injured were rushed to hospitals immediately.The Operation continued for more than 1 month, during which AryaVeers distributed the Rescue Aid (Ration, Clothing, Utensils, and essential items) sent by Sarvadeshik Sabha and several other institutions.
